Just over 80 people enjoyed ‘Toora Town’s Biggest Morning Tea’ in aid of The Cancer Council last Thursday.

It was the second running of the event held at the town’s RSL on Stanley Street, where attendees enjoyed everything from homemade finger sandwiches and the obligatory sausage rolls, to Cornish scones (jam topped with cream - it is important to make the distinction for aficionados) and a bountiful abundance of cheese and biscuits. All washed down with warming cups of tea and coffee.

Organiser Deborah Capon, herself a cancer survivor, hailed the work of the Cancer Councils staff at the event, “They really do the most amazing job supporting people fighting cancer as well as their friends and family,” she said.

“As a breast cancer survivor myself I felt incredibly supported by their telephone counselling service staffed by trained nurses.

“It was a situation that when at my lowest ebb they were able to turn things around and alleviate my worries. I will be forever grateful” she added.

Local businesses supported the event with the donation of prizes for a raffle that along with a gold coin door entry helped raise an amazing $1,657 for the Cancer Council.

This year’s event was especially poignant given the town’s well loved post mistress, Barb Ross just recently lost her battle with cancer.

After thanking everyone who had helped her with organising the event, Deborah announced to those gathered, “I said after the first one last year that that was enough for me but here I am again”.

After the success of this year’s event it only remains to be seen if Toora Town’s Biggest Morning Tea returns to our calendars in 2026. David Barrett
