South Gippsland's live music calendar has three standout events coming up in the next few weeks, two homegrown, and one from the other side of the world.
First up, the Prom Coast's own chart-toppers No Promises bring their Siren Tour to the Toora RSL on Thursday 25 September (and delightfully, the next day is a public holiday). Janine Garvey and Eric Collier, joined by rhythm guitarist Neil Marshall, will perform two full sets featuring songs from their ARIA number one album Siren alongside favourites from across their back catalogue. Drawing on the golden era of 70s country rock, including Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt, and the Eagles, the night promises powerful vocals, rich harmonies and gritty guitars from one of Gippsland's most exciting independent acts. Then on 3 October, Deep South Brass 8 come to the Meeniyan Hall at 8pm, as part of the ongoing "Paint the hall" fundraising campaign. The local Jazz/funk/blues outfit is inspired by the contemporary brass bands of New Orleans, and will be lending their razzle dazzle to help raise funds, alongside a silent auction and raffle.
Meeniyan Hall Committee member, Jane Coker, says the fundraising target to paint the much-loved but rather shabby-looking hall is $30,000. “Our last fundraiser triggered a lot of donations via gofundme https://www.gofundme.com/f/paint-the-meeniyan-hall, and to date the community has donated over $15,000 so we are over half way to our target.” You can help them get all the way by booking a ticket or a table and getting along on the night! Finally, on Saturday 10 October, the Lyrebird Arts Council brings JUNO Award-winning Canadian artist Ruth Moody back to the Meeniyan Town Hall for The Wanderer Returns Tour, with special guest Alice Hurwood. Ruth co-founded The Wailin' Jennys and is known for her luminous voice and deeply evocative songwriting. When she last graced the Hall's stage, the crowd declared the evening one of the finest they'd experienced there. Doors open 7pm, show starts 8pm. Tickets are $50 plus booking fee.
