Fear not the cold and chilly weather, because Prom Coast libraries are turning the July school holidays into an adventure playground of creativity and learning, while adults can cozy up with the Warm Winter Read challenge throughout the cooler months.
Foster Library has packed the holidays with hands-on activities designed to engage young minds while having fun. The program kicks off Monday, July 7 with a NAIDOC activity at Foster Library, where children will weave colorful raffia to decorate clay pots they can take home.
Engineering meets playtime when Foster Library takes their Marble Maze workshop to Toora Community Hall on Wednesday, July 9. Using recycled materials, participants will explore physics and engineering principles while creating working marble mazes to keep. The creative streak continues Monday, July 14 at Manna Gum Community House with Story Stones, where children craft personalised storytelling tools. Participants from year 1 to year 8 can use their stones to enter the "Fishy Stories" writing competition running from July 21 to September 19.
Building and creating are centre stage with a Lego challenge session at Foster Library on Tuesday, July 15, encouraging both solo builds and collaborative masterpieces. The holiday program wraps up Thursday, July 17 with tie-dye library bag decorating, giving children their own custom carriers for future book borrowing adventures.
And while the kids and grandkids are entertained, adults can embrace the Warm Winter Read challenge, running from June 1 to August 31. This statewide initiative encourages readers aged 16 and over to spend more time with books during the cooler months.
Participation is simple - register online through the Read Books website or collect a paper tracker from any Myli library. Any reading counts, from novels and audiobooks to magazines and graphic novels. And whether it's five pages or five chapters, every day spent reading increases your chances to win some fab prizes, including book bundles, a Kobo eReader and Sony headphones.
All school holiday activities require bookings through myli.org.au, and you can head to https://readbooks.com.au/wwr to register for the Warm Winter Read challenge.
