In a world of gadgets and high-tech entertainment, sometimes it is the simplest things that bring us the greatest joy. Children have an amazing ability to turn almost anything into fun. Rolling down a hill, finding shapes in the clouds, or simply running with the wind can transform an ordinary afternoon into an adventure.
As children, we naturally seek connection, movement and play. As adults, however, life changes. Many of us spend our days working, often from home, and since COVID-19 this has become even more common. We become busy "adulting", and activities that once brought us joy can seem frivolous or unproductive.
This is the inspiration behind No Lights No Lycra—a simple idea with a powerful impact. Once a week, people gather to dance together in the dark for an hour. There are no lessons, no mirrors, no judgement and no expectations—just music, movement and the freedom to dance however you choose.
No Lights No Lycra Foster has now been running for just over eighteen months, with a small but dedicated group meeting every Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm at the Foster War Memorial Hall. It has become much more than a weekly dance session; it is a place to reconnect with yourself, enjoy the company of others, and leave feeling lighter than when you arrived.
Maybe I’m biased, but I'm certainly not the only one who thinks so. Here's what some of our regular dancers have to say:
“I love dancing in the dark with a big smile on my face. 10 out of 10, highly recommend.”
“I have always loved dancing. At No Lights No Lycra I’m free to dance for an hour and leave the rest of the world behind.”
“NLNL is a joyful space to unplug, unwind and let loose a little, with no expectation or judgement. Great for the body and mind.”
“You probably won’t find me busting a move on the dancefloor at a party… probably be closer to where the chips and dips are to be honest. Yet surprisingly, I’ve grown to love that hour each week of moving to the music in the dark along with a bunch of other people.” Emma McKay
