Neighbourhood Houses across Victoria are under serious pressure. Years of stagnant government funding, rising costs, and growing community demand have left many struggling to keep their doors open.

Without an urgent funding boost of $11.7 million a year, Neighbourhood Houses Victoria warns that up to 200 houses could be forced to cut hours, staff, or even close–taking vital support away from thousands of Victorians.

Manna Gum Community House is currently in a sound financial position–but many others are not so fortunate.

Neighbourhood Houses are more than just buildings – they’re hubs of connection, learning, and support. At Manna Gum, our programs create over $1.35 million in social value each year, including contributions from volunteers, adult education, community meals, and wellbeing initiatives.

Our volunteers contribute hundreds of hours, making these opportunities possible and amplifying the impact of every government dollar.

We’re joining a statewide campaign calling on the State Government to secure the future of neighbourhood houses. You can help by dropping into Manna Gum Community House to sign a campaign postcard, which will be hand-delivered to our local Member of Parliament.

Keir Paterson, CEO of Neighbourhood Houses Victoria, says "“We know that 94% of neighbourhood house visitors experience improved physical wellbeing and 96% report improved emotional wellbeing as a result of participating. We calculate the overall benefits to the Victoria community at $922M per year. We are saving the government money, now it’s time to save our sector and keep our doors open.” Rebecca Matthews
