Bass Coast Health’s lymphoedema service is improving quality of life for local cancer patients, particularly those whose treatment affects the lymph nodes.

Lymph nodes play a vital role in the body’s immune system, helping fight infection and filter waste. When they’re impacted by cancer or its treatment, fluid can build up in the limbs, causing swelling and discomfort, a condition known as lymphoedema.

Physiotherapist and Accredited Lymphoedema Practitioner Michelle McMahon supports patients by monitoring for early signs of the condition and prescribing compression garments, skincare, and exercise programs.

“Lymphoedema can affect people’s comfort and everyday living, and it’s best to detect and manage it early to ensure it does not progress,” Ms McMahon said.

Patients are referred to Michelle by McGrath Cancer Care Nurse Taryn Robinson, who provides free physical, emotional, and practical support to people affected by cancer and their families.

“I feel privileged to help coordinate care and make the cancer experience more manageable for patients,” Ms Robinson said.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Bass Coast Health continues to offer a range of cancer care services to support the community.
