What in us makes us want to volunteer? In the recent play ‘No Exit’ by Jean-Paul Sartre, performed by FAMDA, ‘Hell is other people’. In many respects this can be true and yet we still find ourselves drawn to be a part of a group, to help, to try.

One of the many wonderful local groups people can be a part of is Friends of Stockyard Creek. Formed in 2017, this group has started to make traction. This past Sunday, the group planted all 500 plants provided by the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (WGCMA). A big thank you to Matt Bowler for helping make this possible.

Friends of Stockyard Creek is a small, determined group, tackling weeds, weather and wrestling challenging terrain. To do this work, we gather on a Sunday of all days. It can be hot, cold, wet and hard work. So, why do we do it?

Because there is something quietly rewarding and, dare I say it, special. People who may not necessarily cross paths meet. More often than not, they have nothing more in common than a love of nature and a desire to care for it. Pure and simple.

Join Friends of Stockyard Creek First Sunday of each month. 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Meet at the Charging Station, in the car park behind the Uniting Church and RSL, Foster. Stay afterwards for a cuppa and cake at the RSL. Follow Friends of Stockyard Creek on Facebook for more information. Emma Mackay
