For nearly 20 years, a special group of volunteers has brought warmth, comfort and compassion to South Gippsland Hospital. The Pastoral Care team has been a steady source of support for patients, families and staff alike, always ready with a friendly smile, a listening ear and a reassuring presence.
Through illness, crisis and life’s biggest challenges, these volunteers have quietly made a world of difference. Even after COVID lockdowns disrupted hospital visits, many of them returned without hesitation to continue their much-loved rounds.
Director of Community Care, Samantha Park, said the volunteers truly embody the hospital’s values of adaptability, trust, excellence, accountability and mutual respect.
“They’ve shared countless laughs, offered comfort to families, and may have enjoyed the occasional newborn cuddle,” she said. “Their ties to local spiritual leaders have also helped patients access spiritual guidance when needed.”
Last week, the hospital celebrated the team’s remarkable contribution, offering heartfelt thanks for their years of service. As part of an exciting refresh, the program will now be known as the Ward Assist Volunteers.
