A Remembrance Day service will be conducted by Foster RSL at the Cenotaph in Foster on Tuesday November 11, at 11.am. Prior to the service, the march of RSL veterans, members and all others who wish to pay their respects will take place, beginning at the Foster Historical Museum. The service will commence with two minutes’ silence, followed by the raising of the flag, and will be conducted by Foster RSL President, Mr. Bruce Lester.

Foster RSL invites all interested members of the community, and the school communities, to attend the service and all are welcome to place wreaths and floral tributes at the Cenotaph in memory of those who died serving Australia.

November 11 marks the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting in World War 1. It is also known as “Poppy Day”, when people of the nations involved wear red poppies in remembrance and respect for those who died. There are many current residents of Foster and district whose ancestors were deployed overseas in WW1 in defence of Australia and in support of other nations. This is our day to remember them with sorrow for their lost lives, but also with gratitude for their efforts and deep respect for having paid the ultimate price while serving their country in times of war.

The names of Foster and district ex-serviceman who lost their lives in this way are listed on Foster RSL’s Cenotaph, with some of those family names still known in the district today through their descendants.

Other ceremonies are also being held around the Prom Coast. At the time of writing there is uncertainty regarding the usual Remembrance Day service in Fish Creek due to the current streetscaping works in the town’s main street. Please contact Mr Danny Brickle for information closer to the 11th November. In Toora, a service commencing at 10.50am will be conducted at The Cenotaph.

Poppies and badges are currently on sale outside the Foster RSL clubrooms and will also be available on Remembrance Day prior to the service. Carole Williams
