Foster Cricket Club has secured $10,000 in South Gippsland Shire Council funding to tackle persistent drainage issues that have plagued the start of recent cricket seasons.

The grant, announced at Wednesday night's Community Grants Presentation, will enable crucial drainage upgrades to ensure the oval is playable when the season commences in October, following the wet winter months.

Club Secretary Ros Griggs expressed the club's gratitude for the funding boost.

"This funding will make a huge difference, ensuring our oval is in a condition where we can commence future cricket seasons in October after the wet winter months," Griggs said. "Without their support, major projects to improve our facilities would not be achievable."

The cricket club was among 23 successful recipients sharing $134,557 in council funding, contributing to projects worth a combined $464,032 across the region.

Other notable Prom Coast recipients included Foster War Memorial Arts Centre ($10,000 for "Do It Deadly!"), Waratah Beach Surf Life Saving Club ($7,500 for strategic planning), and Corner Inlet Pony Club ($6,000 for jumping equipment).

Mayor John Schelling congratulated all recipients, emphasising the grants' role in building stronger communities.

"We're proud to invest in projects that make South Gippsland a stronger, more inclusive place to live, work and learn," Cr Schelling said.

The funding categories covered Developing Community Assets, Building Community Capacity and Culture, and Strengthening Community Sport – with Foster Cricket Club's drainage project falling under community assets development.

Round one of the 2025/26 Community Grants is now open, with applications closing August 31. Community organisations can visit www.southgippsland.vic.gov.au/grants for more information. Cara Schultz
