Ever wanted to know more about Tidal River’s famous Whale Rock? Well, you’re in luck! Prom Coast Ecolink is offering two free guided geology walks at Wilsons Promontory on 8 January and again on 15 January as part of Coastcare Victoria's Summer by the Sea program.

Geologist and palaeontologist Mike Cleeland will lead community walks from the Tidal River campground, bringing to life the geological features described in local geologist Gary Wallis' booklet Wilsons Promontory – Geology Guide.

The easy walks will follow Tidal River and Norman Beach at low tide, with Cleeland discussing the ancient granite formations, geological features, and prehistoric stories written in the rocks along the way. Each participant will receive a complimentary copy of the geology guidebook to refer to during the walk and keep afterwards.

The Wednesday 8 January walk is from 9:30am – 12:00pm, while the Thursday 15 January stroll is from 2:30pm – 5:00pm.

Walkers should meet at the BBQ/picnic area by the Norman Beach carpark (look for the Prom Coast Ecolink flag), and bring a water bottle, sunscreen, hat, weather-appropriate clothing, and footwear suitable for walking on the beach. The walk takes place on uneven, sandy terrain and requires a moderate level of fitness.

While the events are free, places are limited to 30 people per walk with one booklet provided per booking. Registration is essential at promcoastecolink.org/event. The walks are part of Summer by the Sea, now in its 30th year. The 2026 program theme is 'The coast, the sea, and our community', offering fun, educational activities along Victoria's 2,500km coastline.
