Fish Creek artist Lucy Parkinson’s boxes are bright and mysterious. They lead you into the cosmos with a floating sensation. Because they're three-dimensional, there’s room for your mind to go on a journey, one that mixes poetry with science, mystery with nature, and the real with the unreal. Her latest exhibition ‘Unweave a rainbow’ showcases these divine creations, and is on display at Atticus Bookshop and Gallery in Foster throughout May.
Anyone who’s met Lucy knows she is intrigued by the earliest known stories of civilisations. In Unweave a Rainbow, she shows how scientific imagery, derived from black holes, binary star systems, and the background microwave radiation of the universe, can be turned into art that makes us wonder.
The exhibition title is drawn from a John Keats poem, and the tension Keats identified between scientific explanation and poetic enchantment runs through every piece in the show.
Atticus Bookshop and Gallery in Foster is hosting a special exhibition event this Saturday 9 May from 1 to 3pm, with refreshments, an artist talk and the chance to meet and chat with Lucy Parkinson in person. It promises to be a warm and thought-provoking afternoon in good company.
