South Gippsland Shire Council has relaunched its "Shop Local, Eat Local" campaign, encouraging residents to support family-run businesses that actively contribute to schools, sporting clubs and community groups.
Speaking at the September council meeting, Councillor Bron Beach revealed the significant economic impact of local spending. In spring 2024, $81.67 million was spent locally, up from $79 million in 2023. For every $100 spent in South Gippsland, approximately $68 remains in the local economy. Cr Beach noted that spending just 10% more locally could boost the regional economy by millions of dollars.
"Every time you shop locally you're helping keep money in South Gippsland supporting the jobs, businesses, clubs and the services that keep our community strong," Cr Beach added during the September 17 council meeting.
Mayor John Schelling emphasised the broader community benefits of supporting local businesses.
"Supporting local business is important for every community. When you shop local, you not only help a business thrive, but you also strengthen the entire local economy and help to create jobs," he said. Cara Schultz
