On Saturday September 6, Foster Secondary College Music Department is inviting the Prom Coast community to a night filled with music, art, culture and language to celebrate the rich history of the oldest living culture in the world.
Kicking it all off will be a Lions Club BBQ and Manna Gum Dhal around a fire at PJ Wilson Reserve at 4.30pm. A smoking ceremony will then be held as the audience files into Foster War Memorial Arts Centre (BYO drinks and nibbles) to hear top-quality music from Foster Secondary College VCE bands as we wish them well for their up-coming performance exams.
You will then be met by an incredible massed ensemble of 50 singers and a 30-piece student and community band, pumping out tunes by beloved First Nations musicians Archie Roach, Tiddas, Christine Anu, Yothu Yindi and Emma Donovan, along with artists like Goanna who woke up a nation.
To continue the celebrations two very special bands will take the stage. Fresh off an international tour through the UK, Canada and Japan, award-winning Naarm-based artist Bumpy (Amy Dowd) is a magnetic force in Australian music. With a voice that balances tenderness and power, Dowd is raw and hypnotic. Bumpy, and the incredible musicians that bring her music to life, have wowed audiences at the London Jazz Festival, headlined the Sydney Opera House, Meredith Music Festival, WOMADelaide, and more. They've shared stages with legends like Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, Hiatus Kaiyote, and Meshell Ndegeocello. Dowd's work has been featured in Rolling Stone, NME, and on the cover of Coles Magazine, alongside her role co-hosting the 2024 APRA Awards and broadcasting Pebbles on Triple R 102.7fm. This band is a force to be reckoned with and should not be missed.
And then, just when you think the night couldn't get any bigger, the funk, jazz-infused take on disco and soul music of Squid Nebula will rock your world. This band has rightly been described as “taking on the role as the party-starters of Melbourne”. These incredible musicians really do Do It Deadly!
So come along and support your local youth, artists, First Nations families and the wonder that is our community. All that is needed is a crowd of music lovers who want a great night out. See you on the dancefloor for some deadly music, and be sure to bring your singing voices if you know some of the tunes!
Foster Secondary College and Foster War Memorial Arts Centre are so lucky to have the backing of South Gippsland Shire Council, Bendigo Community Bank and Manna Gum Community House, without which nights like this would not be possible. Their continued support of community-based Arts brings life to our local halls, enabling unbelievable performances to grace our stages. To have a council and local financial institution that values engaging events that bring a community together is so special. They have been there from the start cheering this on. Thank you!
