South Gippsland Shire Council is asking local businesses to take part in a Fuel Situation Survey, as it works to build a clear picture of how rising fuel costs are affecting the region's economy.

The council says it is already hearing significant anecdotal evidence from across the shire, from increased delivery costs and rising operating expenses, through to concerns about the viability of next year's crops, but needs hard data to back its advocacy efforts at state and federal level.

"We are hearing lots of anecdotal evidence about delivery costs, running expenses, threats to next year's crops," Mayor Nathan Hersey said. "What we need to work on your behalf is credible data and input from community and businesses."

The survey comes as fuel prices continue to place pressure on industries across South Gippsland, many of which are heavily dependent on diesel and transport for everything from farm operations and food production to tourism and trade.

The survey is anonymous and open to all businesses across the shire. Council is encouraging as many businesses as possible to participate. The Fuel Situation Survey can be completed at www.southgippsland.vic.gov.au/fuel-survey.
