What a massive week it was at the club. Thursday saw a 19-strong field contest the 18-hole Stableford, with four members also playing their men’s singles knockout matches. Neil Henry (20) was simply sublime, winning his match 7/6 and taking out the day with a sensational 37 points. Peter Cambridge (15) finished just two points behind on 35, also claiming nearest to pin on the 17th. The biggest winner, though, was Peter Cook (14), whose perfect tee shot on the 4th went straight into the cup — unseen by his partners — to claim a full “Eagles Nest” of yellow Titleist balls. His ace contributed to a round of 33 points and a ball down the line.
Cook’s love affair with the 4th continued Saturday when he again won nearest to pin and birdied the hole — three shots in two rounds on the same green. Thirty players teed off in rainy conditions for trophies donated by Garry Buckland. Stu Canning (9) excelled to win A Grade with a mighty 40 points, while Vanessa Roberts (38) did the ladies proud, taking B Grade with an excellent 39. Benny Thompson (24) continued his strong form, collecting a ball down the line with 38 points. Further balls went to Leigh Roberts (12), Cook (14), Brad Coates (14) and Kiwi Jones (25), all on 36. Nearest to pins went to Leigh Roberts (6th), Coates (13th), Keith Armstrong (15th) and Greg Cox (17th).

Eleven ladies turned out Wednesday in near-perfect weather, with only a lack of run on the fairways. Kylie Collins (12) took out the October Medal, A Grade and Scratch with 78/66, while Shirley Cook (31) battled through to win B Grade on 117/86. Barb Warren (16) was runner-up, five shots back on 94/78. Only one nearest to pin went off, Kylie Collins on the 17th. In the 9-hole comp on the back nine, Pauline Travers (24) edged ahead of the pack with 10 points. A dishonourable mention went to Beth Curram for driving straight into the 100-metre marker on the 14th and giving Barry a dose of whiplash!
Tuesday’s Stableford saw 12 entrants push through some of the strongest gales of the year. The club’s resident bridesmaid, Mick Connellan (16), became the bride with an impressive 35 points, five clear of Kylie Collins (12) on 30, with Ryan Williams next on 29. Mick also claimed nearest to pin on the 13th. The club welcomed newcomer Alan Sampson for his first competition — unfortunately, he had to retire Thursday after injuring his back.
The popular Chook Run drew 25 players across six days. Kevin Flett (6) edged out Gary Phelan (12), both finishing with 18 points. Darren Piasente (11) took a ball down the line on 17, while John Pruyn (8) and Merle Barham (21) followed with 16. Flett and David Blake both birdied the 17th to earn bonus balls.
Thanks to Phil and the ground staff — the course is in top shape as the Spring Classic approaches.
