If you love books and have kids, last week was the best week of the year: Book Week!
Book Week 2026 ran from 22 to 28 August under the theme A Symphony of Stories, celebrating the diversity of storytelling and the creativity of Australian authors and illustrators. This year also marked the 80th anniversary of the CBCA Book of the Year Awards, a milestone highlighting eight decades of recognising outstanding children's literature.
At Foster Primary School, the celebrations culminated in a Book Week Parade in the senior building, with students from Prep through to Year 6 arriving dressed as their favourite book characters. Teachers joined in the fun too, including a memorable appearance as Max from Maurice Sendak's beloved classic Where the Wild Things Are. Children from Prom Coast Kindergarten also took part, proudly showing off their costumes alongside their older colleagues.
Meanwhile at Fish Creek and District Primary School, students and teachers got in on the action with a colourful parade around the schoolyard. The costumes were as eclectic as the bookshelves that inspired them: fierce Gauls, a giant peach straight out of Roald Dahl, and Winnie the Pooh among the highlights.
