The 2025-26 Victorian fire season officially begins at 1am on Monday, 27 October, with the first Fire Danger Period (FDP) declared for South Gippsland, Wellington, East Gippsland, Baw Baw Shire and Latrobe City councils. Residents are being urged to prepare properties, review fire plans, and ensure compliance with burn-off regulations.

Visitors to Wilsons Promontory can look forward to easier access across Tidal River sooner than expected, with the popular footbridge set to reopen ahead of schedule in early December. Parks Victoria has confirmed that the project is progressing smoothly, with new cross heads, bridge frames, decks and railings now complete.

The 2025/26 Leongatha and District Cricket Association season commenced last Saturday, and  Foster Cricket Club is ready for another exciting summer of cricket. Toora CFA’s Get Fire Ready event attracted a steady stream of attendees last Saturday. After nearly a week of non stop rain, the sun was a welcome addition to the free sausage sizzle and a tour of the extremely well appointed Toora CFA headquarters.

A major win for nature and the South Gippsland community has been announced, with Hancock Victoria Plantations (HVP) confirming that the Fellas Track site at Turtons Creek will no longer be logged. Instead, the 174-hectare coupe will be regenerated and protected as native forest.
