“The best swimming pool in the world” (according to one local man) faces permanent closure unless new volunteers step forward to take over its management, with the Grassy Spur Camping Reserve management committee announcing it will step down after 18 years of dedicated service.
Hidden in the hills of Foster North, the Grassy Spur swimming pool and campsite has stayed (mostly) open through increasing compliance requirements, vandalism, break-ins and ever-changing regulations, with the committee noting the responsibilities of running the facility have grown considerably over the years. After nearly two decades, they say the time has come to hand over to a fresh group of volunteers, and without one, the pool cannot continue.
"Without a new committee, there is a very real possibility that our swimming pool will be forced to close permanently," the outgoing committee said on Facebook. "We know this facility means so much to our community, and we would love to see it continue for many years to come."
A community meeting has been called for Saturday 29 August at 12.30pm at Grassy Spur to discuss the pool's current position, what is involved in serving on the committee, the support available during handover, and the facility's future. No previous committee experience is required, just a willingness to be involved and work as part of a team. The outgoing committee has committed to a thorough handover to make the transition as smooth as possible.
